Self-regulation in the most basic sense involves controlling one’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a manner that is acceptable and produces positive results.  Good self-regulation improves our well-being, creates more understanding of our emotions and the emotions of others resulting in our having more loving relationships too.   We can learn to regulate emotions like frustration or excitement. We can learn to control our impulses and focus on tasks.
