Emotional Intelligence Skills

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is about being heart-smart, not just book-smart. It involves the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage your emotions in positive and constructive ways. EQ also encompasses recognizing your own emotional state and that of others. These skills can be developed, focusing on four core abilities:

  • Self-awareness: Recognizing your emotions, understanding how they influence your thoughts and behavior, knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and having self-confidence.
  • Self-management: Controlling impulsive feelings and behaviors, managing emotions in healthy ways, taking initiative, fulfilling commitments, and adapting to change.
  • Social awareness: Understanding the emotions, needs, and concerns of others, perceiving emotional cues, feeling at ease socially, and recognizing power dynamics in groups or organizations.
  • Relationship management: Developing and maintaining positive relationships, communicating effectively, inspiring and influencing others, collaborating within teams, and managing conflicts.
